So here we go then, the final day of the Premier League season and the title is still up for grabs. Unlike previous seasons the title race is out of our hands, we are hoping for a favour from Wigan Athletic. We have seen stranger things haven’t we? I’m quite relaxed if truth be known, not anxious, not worried. If roles were reversed and Manchester United had a one point clear I’d be shaking like a leaf, nervous as hell.
Can Wigan really cause an upset?
For some ridiculous reason I have an image of Wigan taking a 2-0 lead… yeah call me daft. I don’t know what happens after Wigan take the 2-0, mind. I’ve tried not to think about it…
Look away now if you are easily unnerved. Wigan have lost their last five away matches. and have failed to win their last 17 Premier League games in London. What was that about a 2-0 lead… oh well, never mind.
Now for the positive (of sorts). On the same day United played Stoke earlier this season Chelsea lost 3-1 to Wigan. Perhaps not the best positive, but it’s a positive.
First off we have to take care of our own business. I doubt we’ll be Stoke 7-0 as Chelsea did a couple of weeks ago. Since that defeat Stoke have been smarting and have done okay, they won’t be humiliated again so I imagine a tougher game for United. What shock horror? A team increase their efforts against United! Same old, same old…
The swing in money Stoke can earn could also be a factor. If results are favourable the highest league position Stoke can finish is 9th, this will earn The Potters £9.6m compared to the £6.4m they will earn for finishing in lowest possible position. I’m sure the chairman has had a quiet word or two…
In the reverse fixture at the Britannia Stadium United struggled to a 2-0 victory with goals from Berbatov (yeah that man Berbatov opened the scoring) and Johnny O’Shea chipped in with his only goal of the season.
I fully expect United to play a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formation with Rooney and Berbatov up front. I really hope Berbatov scores today, he had a shocker against Sunderland, and even I’m struggling to defend his performance. The only positive spin I can suggest is Berbatov was in the positions to miss the chances which he often is criticised for. Yeah, I’m struggling.
With Valencia out we’ll see Nani in his preferred wide right position. A tough question could arise for Sir Alex Ferguson next season if we see a better Nani on the right. That leaves Park or Giggs on the left.
With news of Gareth Barry’s injury Carrick will be desperate to play to further his claims for a place in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad. Considering the recent form of Paul Scholes, I’d be surprised if he didn’t start alongside Fletcher..
Van der Sar should start in goal. Evra and Vidic are the certainties with Evans and Rafael the two probables.
Regardless of what happens at Stamford Bride let’s sing our hearts out for the lads. I’m going to enjoy watching the lads for the final time this season before we endure a long summer without watching United. Yeah, we have the World Cup but it just isn’t the same!
Don’t know why but I have visions of Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs or whoever the captain os on the day lifting the Premier League trophy. There has been so many twists and turns this season perhaps there is just one more plot twist in the race to be crowned champions. Having said that its probably blind faith!
What do you think, at 6pm who will be crowned Champions of England?
