Manchester United’s U18s continued their fine form in the league as they beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Bodymoor Heath, courtesy of goals from James Weir and Jack Barmby.
United were confident in possession and could have won by a larger margin, but Paul McGuinness’ side lacked a killer instinct and were lacklustre in front of goal throughout the first period.
United finally broke the deadlock early in the second half, with Weir netting his first academy goal. From the left wing Adnan Januzaj delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, James Wilson was the first to react, but his effort was parried by ‘keeper Calum Barrett, however Weir was in the right position to score the follow up from close range to give United a 1-0 lead.
The goal gave United a new found confidence and from then on the visitors looked in complete control. It wasn’t long until United doubled their advantage. Barmby, who replaced Mats Daehli at half time, took to the spotlight in the 70th minute, as he dribbled into the penalty area with numerous tricks, only to be brought down and the visitors were awarded a penalty. Despite a little slip Barmby converted the penalty to virtually secure another victory in the Barclays U18 Premier League.
United have now won their last three games and they sit comfortably in second place, four points behind leaders Southampton. The U18s next face third place Sunderland at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground, who recently scored six against Newcastle United and have a game in hand over United.
