Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has joined Walsall on loan for the rest of the season.

The Midlands club had Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Aaron McCarey on loan but he has been recalled. Johnstone is likely to make his début against Hartlepool United on Saturday.

The England Under-19 International, who has yet to make a senior appearance for United, has had previous loan spells with Oldham Athletic and Scunthorpe United respectively. For Oldham he made two appearances in pre-season friendlies and kept two clean sheets. At Scunthorpe, he made 12 appearances during a loan period that was extended twice.

Johnstone has impressed for United’s Under-21’s but Ben Amos’ return from his loan at Hull City has allowed the youngster to go out on loan for more first team experience.

The young keeper is highly thought of at the club. He is a fine shot stopper and commands the area. He was part of the FA Youth Cup winning squad of 2011. At international level, he was part of the winning England Under-17 European Championship where he was No. 1 ahead of another highly rated young keeper, Jack Butland.
