Surely we cannot have another set of results go our way like last weekend?
Paul Scholes scoring a late winner against the Noisy Neighbours (I’m still punching the air when I think about goal now) Spurs thrashing a woeful Chelsea and Arsenal embarrassingly losing to Wigan. This weekend sees exciting fixture list. We take on an inform Spurs, City take on Arsenal and a John Terry less Chelsea take on Spurs.
Another sunny day awaits United’s and Spurs players in Manchester today.
Spurs are in great form, consecutive successes against Chelsea and Arsenal are testament to their improvement under Harry Redknapp. Can Spurs make it a hat trick of defeats against the so called “big 4”? We all know the poor record Spurs have at Old Trafford; they have failed to beat United at Old Trafford since 1989. Records are there to broken; I just hope it isn’t today. Of course there was the Pedro Mendes goal that never was but if I hear another Spurs fan mention this I’ll go mad. It wasn’t allowed – get over it! Funny how smaller clubs always remember incorrect decisions against them. Is that right Spurs fans? 😉
Although delighted with the win against City I thought our performance was laboured. We controlled the game without creating a great deal (similar to the Blackburn match). Due to the lack of chances created I feel we should play a 4-4-2 system today.
Van der Sar, Evra and Vidic all start. Ferdinand starts if fit but if unavailable Jonny Evans is an ample replacement. Evans had a decent game against City but didn’t receive the plaudits due to the colossal performance of Vidic.
Once again who should play right back?
I’ve been really worried this season when Gary Neville has played against pace. To be fair, against the likes of Ribery and Bellamy I feel Neville has acquitted himself quite well. Against City, Nev was in Bellamy’s face from the very first minute to the last, Neville didn’t allow Bellamy to turn and utilise his pace. Perhaps Neville was less convincing against Ribery. Ribery skinned him a few times but overall did quite well.
How will Neville cope with Gareth Bale? Bale has been a sensation this season, possibly the most improved player of the season. We were in fact linked to Bale this week, this could be a ploy to unsettle Bale however… Bale is in top form so this could be Neville’s biggest test! Defensively, Valencia is a big ally for Neville.
I would start with Fletcher and Scholes in centre midfield. Without a midweek game Scholes can play 90 minutes if required, although in a two man centre midfield he won’t be allowed the space he enjoyed against City. Nani and Valencia start on the wings. Against City I was surprised to see Giggs start ahead of Nani. Giggs probably had his worst game of the season – tried too many flicks that didn’t come off.
The heavily criticised Berbatov will play in a deeper role adding the creativity which has been lacking in recent weeks. Against City, Berbatov actually played okay when he came on late for Rooney. Hopefully a fit Rooney will lead the forward line.
We have to win! With Chelsea playing 24 hours later we can pile the pressure on. We saw last week how Chelsea reacted to the late Scholes goal. Frank Lampard admitted the late goal was difficult to watch and the effect on Chelsea was obvious. Sir Alex Ferguson was sure to pick up on Lampard’s comments in his press conference on Friday. Fergie pounced on the comments highlighting a sign of nervousness and weakness.
My prediction: 3-1 win for United – goals from Rooney, Berbatov and Nani.
Danger man – Gareth Bale
