“Ben has been unfortunate. He made some mistakes earlier this season and Tomasz Kuszczak got in. His form has been great. Every time he played he was outstanding. What do I do? Pick Ben because he is English or go with form? But Ben has fantastic talent and I am sure he will be tremendous next year. The boy has just signed a new contract and has never said anything to me, so as far as I am concerned, he will be here.”
However, Foster is probably third choice goalkeeper behind Van der Sar and Kuszczak. Should Foster leave United for the benefit of his career?
There is no doubting Foster is a great shot stopper but his decision making is poor at times and is prone to the odd clanger. We’ve seen several mistakes this season notably the goals conceded against the Noisy Neighbours and Sunderland. Foster could class himself fortunate his mistakes have not resulted in United dropping more points.
Funnily enough, I was discussing the future of Foster with @Luzhniki2008 on twitter last night. @Luzhniki2008 made an excellent point, this is what he said:
“Think Foster will either go out on loan or leave by next season – don’t think he planned to be playing in the Manchester Senior Cup less than 2 months before the World Cup.”
The pre-season injury to Van der Sar came at the perfect time for Foster. It allowed Foster the opportunity to stake a claim to be first choice goalkeeper virtually guaranteeing his plane ticket for the World Cup. How things have changed when lining alongside the kids in the Manchester Senior Cup…
I tend to agree with Fergie’s comments regarding Kuszczak – he has surpassed Foster. Kuszczak has shown good form but still lacks presence in commanding his penalty area and looks vulnerable on crosses. Will a commanding presence come with experience? Kuszczak is a good number two goalkeeper.
With recent rumours regarding the arrival of another goalkeeper how do you view the future of Kuszczak and Foster? Should Foster fight for his place?
