February Goal of Month
In February Manchester United scored 15 goals in 6 games. The breakdown is as follows:
- Wayne Rooney – 6 goals
- Own Goal – 4 goals
- Dimitar Berbatov – 2 goals
- Michael Owen – 2 goals
- Paul Scholes -1 goal
For goal of the month I think we can rule out the Own Goals and the goal Scholes scored against AC Milan at the San Siro, although Scholes’ goal is definitely the funniest goal of the month – the ball hitting his standing leg and trickling into the goal.
The pick of goals which I consider to be goal of the month are:
- Rooney’s first goal against AC Milan
- Berbatov’s goal against Everton
- Rooney’s first goal against West Ham United
- Owen’s goal against Aston Villa
Rooney against AC Milan
Approximately on the sixty minute mark Valencia replaced Nani after a poor performance from Nani. The first thing Valencia did when he received the ball was to attack the opposing full back which Nani had failed to do all game. Rooney had been crying out for a quality cross for him to attack and Valencia duly applied – a deep cross which picked out Rooney at the back post for him to score a difficult header.
Berbatov against Everton
After making a rare start in recent games Berbatov scored the only goal against Everton. Early in the match Valencia drilled in a low cross where Berbatov controlled the ball and coolly finished. Although this goal may sound simplistic, for me the control shown by Berbatov made this goal special. He controlled a difficult ball in an instance and the finish was the cherry on top.
Rooney against West Ham United
Rooney’s goal was certainly the highlight after a frustrating first half. The Berbatov, Valencia and Rooney show were at it again. Berbatov with good vision lifted a pass to Valencia, Valencia then volley crossed the ball for a diving Rooney to head in. The volley cross by Valencia is a real difficult skill but his execution was inch which Rooney agreed with in a post match interview. The fact Rooney scored with a diving header makes this goal even better.
Owen against Aston Villa
After a quick start form Villa, United were on the back foot. With Berbatov robbing Richard Dunne the ball eventually fell to Owen just outside the area who brilliantly finished. The finish was of the highest order, simply world class; Brad Friedel didn’t have a chance in goal. I nominate the goal prely on the finish.
