Loan Watch 2012/13: Angelo Henriquez at Wigan Athletic

Roberto Martinez promises Sir Alex Ferguson that Angelo Henriquez will return to Manchester United in form | Mail Online

Roberto Martinez has promised Sir Alex Ferguson he will send Angelo Henriquez back to Manchester United ready to challenge for a regular starting spot.

The Wigan boss has pulled off quite the coup in agreeing in principle a loan deal for the Chilean striker, who joined Manchester United last summer Unversidad de Chile.

Henriquez, a full international despite being just 19 years old, has struggled to make any inroads on Ferguson's first-team, and has even missed out on opportunities with the reserves.

Martinez has previous when it comes to shaping the career of young United players, namely Tom Cleverly who enjoyed a stint at the DW Stadium in 2010 and is now a regular in the England side.

The Latics' boss said: 'Angelo is as good a goalscorer as you will find. He scored goals at Universidad de Chile and he is going to score goals here.

'I am sure he will be an important player for United. We are glad we can work with him and he can use Wigan as Tom Cleverley did and adapt to what is needed in this league.'
Nothing official from the club yet, but the loan seems likely.

Hopefully he gets games and doesn't rot away on the bench

Arouna Kone goes to the African Nations Cup in January. Definitely a chance he'll play regularly, Martinez did wonders for Cleverley, he's a very good coach and has got a team of (shall we say) average players doing pretty well. On paper they should have been gone down last season but they finished the season very well.

Looking forward to see how Henriquez fares at Wigan. Another team we can watch when United are not playing.

Official now - HENRIQUEZ MOVE CONFIRMED

With the way Franco Di Santo played yesterday, I see no reason why he can't get vital playing minutes at Wigan.

Not 19 until April. Think he could do very well at Wigan. At his age, I don't think it's essential for him to play every game and impress. He's not played at all for the first team and hasn't been getting many games in the U21s. Just getting the experience is enough really.

I'm glad he's gone, just hope he gets playing time, unlike Macheda at QPR.

Henriquez has apparently hit the crossbar with a headed effort.

Roberto Martinez hails Wigan's young loan signing Angelo Henriquez | Manchester United News, Fixtures, Results, Transfers | Sky Sports

Roberto Martinez has tipped Angelo Henriquez to become a crowd pleaser at the DW Stadium while on loan with Wigan.

The teenage striker was handed his debut as a half-time substitute during Wigan's FA Cup clash against Bournemouth.

The 18-year-old Chilean has joined the Latics from neighbours Manchester United and the Wigan boss is looking forward for him to show his talents.

Martinez said: "There is such a freshness about his play.

"Angelo's movement was outstanding and his knack of getting a couple of yards in the box gave him a very good chance, which nearly brought him his first Wigan goal.

"I have a feeling he is going to be a real crowd favourite."

"Angelo tries to be very clever. Because he is not the most physical, he avoids 50-50 contact with defenders but his running into space is really sharp and incisive.

"We do need to get to know him a little bit better. Sometimes he made some great moves and we couldn't see him.

"But he will give us a completely different dimension.

"His attitude is incredible. He is a young man with great standards who is desperate to be successful in the Premier League."

He is likely to be used by Martinez while Arouna Kone is away on international duty for the Ivory Coast during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Watched bits of the game, watched more when he came on. Di Santo was awful. Good headed finish from Henriquez, at the back post unmarked. Only reason Di Santo should start over him is experience. Henriquez much better.
