Stam was a colossal at the heart of United's defence in the treble winning season. He'd be in most people's top five centre defenders in Fergie's era, along with Vidic, Ferdinand, Bruce and Pallister.
For my money the partnership of the central defence is important. Bruce/Pallister and Ferdinand/Vidic are two good pairings. Vidic and Stam are two of a kind and maybe wouldnt make an ideal pairing, though they wouldn't be bad Ferdinand is the best central defender during Fergie's era in my opinion, with Vidic or Stam his partner. It boils down to Vidic or Stam - what a question!
