Manchester United Academy XI to face Nantwich - Official Manchester United Website

Manchester United will send an Academy XI to Nantwich Town on 25 September to mark the 60th anniversary of the teams' meeting in the inaugural FA Youth Cup.

There is an interesting tale to the 1952 clash in which the Reds racked up a record 23-0 victory in the competition, en route to lifting the trophy in the first of a run of five successive triumphs. The players involved would go on to achieve national and international fame under the collective nickname of 'the Busby Babes.'

After the tie was switched to United's then training ground, The Cliff, under what was described as 'primitive floodlighting', the Reds outclassed the opposition and were three goals ahead after only six minutes. By half time, the scoreline had reached double figures but coach Jimmy Murphy instructed his side to keep hunting more goals in front of the 2,600 crowd.

Duncan Edwards, John Doherty and David Pegg each scored five times while Eddie Lewis helped himself to another four. Remarkably, under-siege keeper Brian Thorley still did well enough to impress Sir Matt Busby and earn a move to the Reds.

United's Ronnie Cope, who went on to play for Nantwich late in his career, has been invited to be Guest of Honour for the match at the Weaver Stadium later this month. Admission is 9 for adults, 6 for concessions and 2 for children, with fans able to pay at the turnstiles on the night.

Frank Stubbs, who played for Nantwich in the original match, is also due to attend to see a line-up of United's current batch of promising youngsters. The Reds have already won at the Weaver Stadium this season as Warren Joyce's Under-21s defeated Stoke City there in the opening game of the campaign.

Wonder if they'll get some of the games on ITV4 again this season. Would be great if this was on, may be why it's at OT which I have to say is a great move by the club, surprising to see at this stage of the competition. Think they should have more U18s and Reserves games at OT. Suppose the fear is the pitch condition will worsen.

Saturday's match against Fulham has been postponed due to Fulham's involvement in FAYC, that game is on Tuesday but I suspect they want to keep the players fresh which is fair enough really. Our U18s will play a friendly with Man City at Carrington instead on Saturday. I have no idea if the friendly will be on MUTV but I hope it will be, I'd imagine if the Fulham game was going to be on MUTV then there is a possibility the friendly will be, only reason it won't be on MUTV is if the game is a "behind closed doors" game.

Unfortunately it seems MUTV are not televising the friendly.

Looking forward to the weather clearing up so we can watch some U18s and U21s football.

The boys played Everton this morning. Finished 1-1, sounds like we should have won though. Rudge scored our goal. Rothwell started his first game in a while and was apparently excellent. Ioannou and Wilson back on the bench too, not sure if they played at all but good news that they're back.

Team: Sutherland, Weir, C Evans, Grimshaw, Dalley, Pearson, Pereira, Rudge, Byrne, Rothwell, Daehli.

U18s: Fulham vs Manchester United report - Official Manchester United Website

Everton have three games in hand on Paul McGuinness' side and require only four points to steal third spot in the closing stages of the season.

Wasn't really sure where to post this but Everton under 18's lost yesterday to Fulham meaning that they need to get a point in their last game against Crystal Palace to qualify to the semi finals at United's expense. The game will be played on Tuesday.
