A statement released by The FA says:The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England Manager.

This follows a meeting involving FA Chairman David Bernstein, FA General Secretary Alex Horne and Fabio Capello at Wembley Stadium.

The discussions focused on The FA Board’s decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello’s response through an Italian broadcast interview.

In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio’s resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England Manager with immediate effect.

David Bernstein said: “I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England Manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner. We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.”

A media conference with David Bernstein and the Club England Management team will take place at Wembley on Thursday at 12 noon.

The FA will not be making any further comment until the media conference.
Possible FA statement..... Harry for England? or Pearce?

Would imagine Pearce will take over till after the Euro's. Harry won't leave in the middle of the season.

Pearce could be a stop gap measure till the end of the season.

The decision to sack Terry should have at least been discussed with Capello so I can understand why he's walked.

Pearce is a terrible manager. He is tactically inept.

If it's Stuart Pearce, kiss the Euros goodbye. The U21 tournament last summer is enough for Pearce not to be become boss. Not sure how he's even Olympic team boss, obviously couldn't get anyone else.

Yeah I agree Pearce is a terrible manager, he's done absolutely nothing to warrant him being under-21 coach other than being born English. If the FA choose to not appoint a manager till the end of the season or after the Euro's I think he'll get the caretaker job purely because the FA will want to appoint from within.....

A number of players have come out and praised Capello since yesterday's resignation. Why is there a difference of opinion with players and fans?

To be fair to Capello stripping a captain of the armband should be the managers decision and his alone. The FA are run by wankers.

It should be his decision, but if he's to ignorant to notice that having Terry continue as captain was unworkable then someone needs to step in and do his job for him. How Terry got the captaincy back in the first place is beyond me but letting him keep the armband with these allegations hanging over him was ridiculous in my opinion. The FA had no option but to intervene if Capello wasn't going to strip him off it.

Well that games a write off then.... on the plus side I would have thought he's more likely to play under-21's so there's a better chance of Welbeck, Cleverley, Jones or Smalling getting on the pitch.

I think Cleverley, Smalling, Welbeck and Jones would have been involved with Capello in charge. They have all featured for England apart from Cleverley, who surely would have done if not for injuries.

Maybe but I'm not so sure other than Jones + Welbeck. Capello seemed to have fallen in love with Jones, comparing him to Baresi and Hierro, so he'd play, probably at right back. He'd settled on Cahill and Terry as his centre backs so don't think Smalling would get in there. Parker and Barry and probably Gerrard would have been Capello's midfield. Welbeck would have got a look in because he is Englands best striker other than Rooney but I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd just played Rooney up top.

They'd all be close because they're international standard but I think Pearce would be more prepared to cast off average international players with more experience like Cahill and Barry in exchange for talent.

What's more important - the new manager is English or the best man for the job?

Best man or atleast a manager that's gives entertaining press conferences like Warnock or holloway. English is preferable if you cam get the right man.

Best man for the job. If I got to choose it would be Hiddink hands down if he wanted the job. Don't think Redknapp is the man to solve all the problems we have and don't see why he'd take the job anyway if he's sane, Spurs are only a top class striker away from a genuine title shot next season.

Not many managers in the Prem are English. 2 have been sacked this season. Not many good English managers, quite poor really from such a large pool. Redknapp, the best English manager around. They don't need someone English in my opinion, just someone who can speak English. You never know... it could be Mourinho with him leaving Madrid at end of the season and wanting to come back to England.

Mess of a situation really. I don't believe it HAS to be an English manager appointed although it seems inevitable Redknapp will get it. Agree with those who are suggesting Hiddink. He would be excellent.

England really have a potentially excellent team. Cleverley, Wilshere, Welbeck, Sturridge, Rooney etc... Really skillful, talented players. Whereas the 'golden generations' in previous times have been the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, John Terry - no skill.

    Hope it gets sorted soon.
