Match Report: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United
By Lee Savery
Wayne Rooney scored on his return from injury to put Manchester United into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The only goal of the game came after nine minutes when Anderson’s through pass expertly found Javier Hernandez who ran into the box before squaring the ball to Rooney who slid the ball into the empty net.
It was the game’s only real highlight in a tepid affair, with very few chances, that had many similarities with their last meeting at Old Trafford which also ended 1-0. United had made 10 changes and the likes of Anderson, Nani and Rooney were all returning from injury.
From the very few chances that were created, Dan Potts excellent clearance off the line stopped Nani’s effort from finding the net. Rooney also had a shot saved, from 30 yards, by Jussi Jaaskelainen.
In the second half, Hernandez had two goals disallowed for offside and also blazed over after dispossessing a West Ham defender. The Mexican was also denied by Jaaskelainen from close range. All this while West Ham had a lot more possession but struggled to create any clear cut chance against a sturdy United defence.
Rooney had the chance to double the lead when Ryan Giggs cross was handle by Jordan Spence. However, United’s No. 10 could only find the Stretford End with his penalty.
Not a classic United performance but they are through to face Fulham at Old Trafford in Round 4.
