Do Manchester City Have Scouts?

By G@mb!t

I have come across an interesting trend recently, which other football fans have noticed too. Any player linked with a big English team, City are also linked and consequently the price increase in the player’s valuation is tenfold once City poke their ugly heads in. Be it David Silva, Fernando Torres, Angel Di Maria, Milos Krasic, Edin Dzeko, James Milner or even Joe Cole. Well one can always say, it’s the papers! It isn’t true!! Unfortunately in my opinion it is very much true, City have quickly become the villains of the transfer market because they have a stupid habit of messing up the transfer market for the other teams. They are like an over enthusiastic bunch of idiots with cash to throw around but they don’t get the point, MONEY ISNT EVERYTHING!!!

I doubt players like Silva, Torres, etc. wish to play for a club which in my opinion has shown no loyalty to players that have served them well, for example Stephen Ireland. City seem to be bent upon continuing in this trend, which asks a very interesting question. Do City have scouts or do they buy every tabloid possible and show an interest in every player linked to another club?

Clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, etc. spend millions on scouting, they have people in all continents on the lookout for the next Kaka, Rooney, Terry or Julio Cesar, etc. They compile exhaustive reports on the players and spend hours keeping an eye on their progress, and then there is Manchester City. I think they have a team of spies who have a job of finding out who the players are and the rest is history. This is how I imagine the story usually goes in the media. Media reports comments from a “source” that Man Utd or Arsenal, etc. are linked with Player X, rated highly… club are asking for 10 million for said player, 2 days later, Manchester City and Arsenal are battling it out for Player X who is believed to be valued by his club at around 25 million, Manchester City have said to have declared an interest in the player and have stolen a march on their rival by opening negotiations for the player!!! (In my opinion icon smile Do Manchester City Have Scouts? )

Sound familiar?

I think something similar happened when Abramovich bought Chelsea. Players like Essien, Robben, Mikel, etc. all linked to other clubs before Chelsea signed them, thank god, they have managed to sign a few scouts. God only knows when City will try to employ scouts. For now they’re happy trying to ensure anyone interested in a big name signing better bankrupt themselves first or not sign them at all. I think one thing’s for sure, they don’t like the saying ‘Live and let live’.

  2. haha I’ve been saying this for months, as have a lot of people. Apparently they have been scouting Ozil for nearly a year now. Seems they were the only ones who wanted Boateng too. But the majority of their interests seem to come from us and other clubs who can’t compete with them in terms of money…Spurs, Arsenal and Villa in particular.

  5. There probably is some truth in what you say, but they obviously had scouts out watching Adam Johnson. That’s the one signing they’ve made that’s an undeniably superb piece of business. Didn’t see him taking to the Premier League so fastly, and within half-a-season he’s one of the best wingers in the Premier League. We should whack a bid in.

Yes it is logical City don’t have any agents and we are really trying to buy everyone that the papers say ! If we waited around for your current alleged purchases we would have a long wait ! SAF says United are not buying anyone…. That was one quote from the papers. On the other hand i don’t see the world rushing in to by Raul who you are currently linked with on a free…..Our interest is bound to put the price up……
I think a lot of agents are playing a lot of people to make money for them. I don’t think btw that we are the only team in the world to break the transfer record in the UK. I doubt we will be the last. I also think you might not be so bothered if you had some money to spend…….

  16. Evidently Manchester City does indeed have scouts, look at Adam Johnson, Jerome Boateng and Joe Hart amongst others in the first team. Aswell as the likes of Dedryck Boyata, Alex Nimely, Ben Mee plus the young lad the have signed from Chester this summer. We may poke out noses in for players we will never get, Villa, Ribery etc but why not? It isn’t against the laws of the game, Fifa don’t have an issue with it, nor do the clubs who we offer the big money to. The players do go up in value but the recent Yaya Toure saga should prove we can turn our backs on a transfer. Btw TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK.

  19. Does the author really think that it is purely City’s fault that the prices go up? Surely the seller has a role in that. Remember the money charged for Renaldo? Was that inflated because Real could or were willing to pay it?

It is also more than a little arrogant and somewhat ignorant to claim that City do little or no scouting. As one poster has already mentioned, Adam Johnson didn’t appear from another team’s list of potential targets.

The problem here comes from the fact that City want/need to improve from the status of ‘also-rans’ which they have held for many years. How do you do this? You buy the players that can bring you up to the same level as the teams with whom you are trying to compete.

It is no great revelation to point out the self-fulfilling prophesy of the Champions League millions and the perpetuation of the ‘Top 4.’ How is that monopoly to be broken? The ONLY way is for a team to be backed with a very large sum of money that compensates for the lack of CL revenue. I say only way as promising players developed in the lower teams are often poached by the wealthy teams either here or abroad. It is incredibly hard to compete at the top.

Man U have a great team and are well coached. The same can be said of Chelsea and Arsenal. Liverpool had an off year and given their financial issues of ownership may be in for a lean spell. Tottenham have a great team but have also spent a load of money. Unlike City though, they haven’t been held to ransom as much in fees.

So, I suppose what I am trying to say is City are doing what they need to do to compete at the level they wish to compete. There is no other way to do it in the current environment. You need the class of player who can bring Champions League football. If the selling teams are looking at a big pay-day because they know City have deep pockets, it’s not City’s fault. I am sure they would be glad to pay the proper price for players and not the inflated values quoted to them.

So, I am sorry if United fans are upset that the cost of the great players has gone up but it could also be said that that is what the buying power of United has been doing to City for years. And, to use a cliche, what goes around comes around.

I am looking forward to an exciting premier league next year where Manchester derbies are not considered to be forgone conclusions and upsets if City manage a win. Why shouldn’t we all enjoy that prospect?

What a fantastic article……is it really to be believed that City or any other proffesional football club would operate without the services of a scouting network, seriously fellas come on! Yes City are linked with every big name player that may be available but open your rag blinkered mind for just one minute and maybe you will realise that agents leak rumours to the press whether there is any truth in them or not ,for the sole purpose of trying to get the best deal possible for thier client. It’s gone on for years, think back to when you had money and you might remember that you were linked with all the top players! Honestly and you call us the bitters……

I have nothing against Utd, if City don’t win a trophy then I would rather Utd than a London team……ok so people are going to shout at me for that!
In terms of transfers, personally it sells papers, clubs are using City to hike the prices up, don’t think City are like bidding for every single player around, it is quite funny that wherever you turn City are interested in this player or that! Nothing City can do about that and what journos say!

as utd fans I can understand why with the ways things are at old Trafford the need to hit out at the rival team in Manchester who don’t have owners he’ll bent on wreaking the club with debt
utd should never got rid of the coolmore boys but they were chased out over a horse which fergie never owed stud rights to !! Now the fans will chase more owners out ! Only problem is while it’s valued at 1.2b it’s not worth it dead money !

Look at the number of Foreign Youngsters at the Club and you will see the Network works well.

That said, when a big name player becomes available and you have the money then why would you not bid if said player will improve your Side?

  30. I don’t suppose it ever occured to you that MCFC are not interested in the vast majority of players they are linked with, and that the linking is done by either players agents, for obvious reasons, or by the press, also for obvious reasons.

As far as I can see, City have signed one player, one youngster, extended Vierras’ contact, and put in ( a more than fair) offer for Milner. I can’t really see much of a problem with that.

I would also point out that throughout the duration of the Premiership, Man Utd have enjoyed the advantage of the largest player budget for quite some time, and made the most of it.

City are messing up the transfer market?..er, who paid 30 million for a centre half then worth not half that value??, twenty odd for Veron years ago?..30 odd for Berbaflop and Rooney in recent years?
If you think that City are interested in all the players we are linked with then you must be thick!…it’s the agents who are touting their names around to make clubs aware that they are after a move.
Funny really how yoonited fans say they are not bothered about little City and we’re insignificant isn’t it..then articles like this have increased 10 fold in the past two season!..You greeted the wins at OT this year like no other games…Face it, the noisy neighbours from the City next door are getting your back up because you know the only way for us is up and you’re already on the slide..

He was our player of the season the year before, then lost form and fitness last year, playing very poorly in the few games he managed. He then immediately bangs in a transfer request, rather than knuckle down and fight for his place.

  48. While I don’t think the Manchester City academy is the best out there for producing world class stars, it is certainly a very well respected academy and known for producing high quantities of good players who go on to make a career in football. It would only take a red who has deluded himself to think otherwise as this article suggests. I think even most reds would accept that in reality, it is down to the papers; we are simply the easiest option to fill columns. I also think agents and clubs are making a habbit of mentioning City to speed up other clubs in making bids while also increasing the price. If we are indeed bidding for every player on the planet, we have certainly gone about it quietly aye (that’s just the garry cook way you see)

Now Gambit, stop talking tripe and giving the rest of the reds a bad name, one might think your beginning to sound bitter, i will accept it as an honest mistake though, hopefully you’ll do better in the spelling test tomorrow at school.
