Which Youngsters at Manchester United Excites You?

Manchester United’s young players are increasingly becoming the focus of attention. Which United’s youngsters excite you? Can they emulate Paul Scholes, David Beckham or Ryan Giggs? I’ve not included Johnny Evans and Rafael as they have regularly featured in first team/squad.

Tom Cleverley

Cleverley (age 20) is a midfielder that can play in a central role or on the left. Has spent the previous season on loan at Watford, where he made 35 appearances scoring 11 goals. Is Cleverley the goal scoring midfielder we are crying out for? Cleverley has been rumoured with a loan move to Newcastle for forthcoming season.

Federico Macheda

Who can forget the late winner Macheda (18) scored against Aston Villa? Not me, I still feel twinges in my back after lifting a mate over my shoulders in celebration (worth it though).  Personally, I have high hopes for Macheda, he’s strong, quick and can finish. Macheda is by no means not the finished article, there are areas of his game which require improving. However,  this will come with experience as he seemingly improves on each viewing.

Gabriel Obertan

Acclimatisation is how I would describe Obertan’s first season at United. We’ve seen real glimpses of the Frenchman’s ability, notably the assist in Wolfsburg and the cracker scored against the Scousers in a reserve match. Obertan can play on the left, right and through the middle; a good pre-season could see Obertan feature more in first team.

The signing of Obertan raised a few question marks from his former manager at Bordeaux Laurent Blanc. Blanc’s suggestion was that Obertan must overcome physiological and mental challenges to fulfil his true potential at United. Ritchie De Laet

De Laet (21) was awarded reserve player of the season for his efforts over the last nine months. The Belgian is capable of playing all positions in the defensive line, with right back probably his preferred position. With his ability to play several positions will De Laet become the new John O’Shea?

Matthew James

James (18) will spend a successive season on loan at Preston after joining the Lancashire club earlier this year. James has represented England at all age levels so is obviously highly rated. I’ve heard comparisons to Paul Scholes, this true?

Paul Pogba

The signing of Pogba caused a stir. Perhaps jumping on the bandwagon of Chelsea’s alleged tapping up of Gaël Kakuta, Le Havre (Pogba’s former club) claimed United had tapped up their young star. These claims were found to be untrue. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen of Pogba, Vieira-esque in style. Pogba’s highlight of season came when he scored a magical goal against the Noisy Neighbours. Is Vieira-esque a fair comment?

Mame Biram Diouf

A fantastic potential is how Ole Gunnar Solskaer described Diouf. From what I’ve seen, it is difficult to argue with the opinion of the United legend. Diouf has followed a similar route to Solskjaer; both played for Molde in Norway, both have joined United at a similar age and both have scored on their Old Trafford debut.

I’m excited from what I’ve seen of Diouf. He has pace, strong in the air and on first impression a cool finisher, although I’ve been told otherwise from those which have seen more of Diouf. Read a more in depth blog about Diouf here: Future Prospect: Mame Biram Diouf

Will Keane

Very much similar to Berbatov in style in my opinion, although I guess too many won’t like the sound of this comparison. Keane is still very young so is some way of first team football. He is currently representing England in the European U17 Championship.

I’ve perhaps missed out your personal favourite. Ravel Morrison, Davide Petrucci and Joshua King for example. By all means, discuss the players not listed.

So can the current crop of youngsters dominate English football for the next decade? Which of the younger players are you excited by?

  2. Pogba .. Have seen the kid play and he’s absolute dynamite … Very much our kext Roy Keane, I hope … Cleverly, Will Keane, James maybe in a couple of seasons … Obertan, Macheda and Diouf next term possibly .. But then again, the eternal dilemma: To blood these kids and risk dropping points or use them sparingly. Lets face it, I dont think that any of these kids are at the level of Scholes and Giggs, when they first arrived. Maybe they will become good or perhaps very good but to reach the stratospheric heights is not quite possible, in my view. Simply because of the changing dynamics of today’s game. In the nineties, we could afford to slip up here and there but now the margin for error is minimal, very minimal. It’ll be interesting to see what transpires though. Will also be interestin to see if the likes of Kiko are willing to spend another season on the fringes or like Rossi, will go in search of greener pastures …

    Cheers

  3. I have high hopes for Cleverly. I think he has a future at OT. Remember Gibson. He loaned out till 22. It would be same for Tom i think. Definitly need versatile in PL. Within 2 yr i think he will make it. “Pogba” good prospect. Not pace we required from a CM. Lazy at times. But technique/pass are briliant. “JAMES” going to our next midfield mastero.

  4. i think instead of moving for milner (if that interest is true) we should perhaps give pogba a chance in the first team….people may say its too early but the lad is 17 and didnt fabregas start for arsenal when he was 16/17..Pogba certainly has the physique to play premier league football right now! wud save a bucket load on milner and looks as though her has a brighter future than milner!

  5. diouf has what it takes next drogba lads !

  6. To tell you the truth, they all are pretty bad… i saw chelsea’s youth team when they won against Villa and to tell u the truth, i dont think any of the above have more talent than the players from that line up.. its depressing as u would have thought we would have at least one superstar in the making but we dont.

btw, we should get rid of macheda while we have the chance, most hype’d player in our club

  7. i herd cleverly want to go to newscastle. i think fergie should give a chance.

  8. what about anderson, gibson, rafael and fabio?

  9. diouf is already old. he wont make it united. rafael is younger but far better. rafael and fabio are the futer

  10. Welbeck is by far our best prospect but he’s currently very injury prone. If he can get over that he’s a certainty.

  11. They are all highly talented with fantastic futures ahead of them and will become a dominate force not to be messed, ive also enjoyed watching others starlets such as fabio da silva who is a typical classy brazilian, rodrigo possebon who is a very tricky midfielder, sam hewson and oliver norwood both have fantastic shooting power and make a solid midfield base, corry and cathcart are solid defenders while oliver gill is quite similar to vidic in the way he challenges for everythink that comes his way.

  12. We also got amos who is a highly talented stopper with mass potential- fully deserved his upgrade, plus to deadly duo of eikrem and king who has continued the ole trend, 2 massively skilled norwegians with a clinical eye for goal, there also young petrucci, massacci and fornastier, 3 talented italians in our academy to keep an eye on as they will be big time players- a new has begun and its only a matter of time until sir alex unleashes his new crop on the english game.

  13. Paul Pogba, Josh King and Will Keane – need to be fast tracked.

Also rans – Obertan, Macheda and Wellbeck have not continued with their initial break throughs.

  14. Danny S…. “btw, we should get rid of macheda while we have the chance, most hype’d player in our club”

Never heard such thrash in my life. Macheda has been involved in the first team since he was 17 and has looked very impressive every time he has featured. If any one of our youngsters is going to make it its him. King and Pogba look very good too.

  15. Paul Pogba. Fergi should throw him in this season. He is 17 and is good physically. Fabrigaz was only 17 when he start playing why not pogba with good presence physically?

  16. i see a few clueless comments has struck…norry you say diouf is old and wouldnt make it, plain stupid as thd lad is only 22 and reminds us of ole, great talent…the lad danny s who claims we aint better than chelsea youth should just go support chelsea as he aint a clue…anyone rippin on gabby, danny and kiko should also take a hike…these kids are the future of utd.

  17. Pogba and Petrucci have it. Will the gaffer fast track them, or what? Amos, King and Keane need to play! Welbeck will look brilliant in Scotland or the Championship!

  18. Pogba, King, Morrison and Petrucci. Cracking players that need to keep their heads down and work hard and should all make it.

  19. Pogba tunnucliff have a great future ahead fergie shoul give them opportunity to shine.
