The Next Manchester United Captain?

With the uncertainty of Gary Neville’s future (yet to sign a contract extension) I decided to run a poll on which current Manchester United player us fans wanted as their next club captain. I felt the obvious candidates were Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, and Wayne Rooney. Other was another option which saw notable suggestions for Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic.

The poll had been running for approximately three weeks in which time ninety votes were placed. Ferdinand took an immediate lead with Giggs in second place. Surprisingly (to me anyway) for the first twelve days or so Rooney had very few votes, it was only until the later stages Rooney surged into the contest.

During the final stages of the poll, there was a different leader from one day to the next with Ferdinand, Evra and Rooney all swapping positions for top spot. At one stage the long time leader Rio, had slipped from first to third – the poll was that tight.

The Result

From the ninety votes received Rio Ferdinand came out on top with twenty five votes, Rooney second and Evra was third.

  • Rio Ferdinand (28%, 25 Votes)
  • Wayne Rooney (27%, 24 Votes)
  • Patrice Evra (24%, 22 Votes)
  • Ryan Giggs (11%, 10 Votes)
  • Other (8%, 7 Votes)
  • Role of a football captain not important (2%, 2 Votes)
