Fire Sale at Manchester United?
The papers this morning have suggested there will be a summer fire sale at Old Trafford due to the mounting debt; a staggering 10-15 players will leave Manchester United in the summer.
I don’t believe this for one moment! 10-15, not a chance… Perhaps three or a maximum four but not 10.
The papers are suggesting the players under most threat are Nani, Michael Owen, Owen Hargreaves, Gabriel Obertan, Ben Foster, Tom Cleverley, Craig Cathcart, Danny Welbeck and Zoran Tosic.
Out of the listed players I feel Foster, Cathcart and Tosic are the most likely to leave Old Trafford and to be honest I don’t think Nani will. What about Anderson? Maybe…
With the recent news of van dar Sar signing a one year contract extension there could be some truth in the departure of Foster and he has yet to be honest to convince. Cathcart could find himself in a similar situation with the recent signing of Chris Smalling.
Tosic is almost certain to leave in my opinion. After arriving for a fee of nearly £7 million, he has barely been given a chance in the first team, this suggests Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t fancy him as a player. With Tosic already on loan at FC Cologne he could secure a permanent summer move.
Who will sign Owen Hargreaves? Even on a free transfer which manager would be willing to sign a player that has barely played for two years? Perhaps a pay as you play contract… I’d be surprised to see Hargreaves leave United this summer.
Obertan, Cleverley and Welbeck are all young players; their contracts are not going to be a financial strain.
I find the suggestion of Cleverley leaving very strange. Cleverley has been very impressive scoring plenty of goals for both Watford and the England U21s. I can’t see Fergie letting an exciting youngster leave.
I get the impression Fergie fancy’s Welbeck as player. Welbeck has been in and around the first team for a while now but has struggled when played, mainly due to being selected out of position – as a winger, he is definitely a striker. Welbeck now needs first team action, hopefully his loan spell at Preston will aid his development.
If you have been following my blogs you will now I’m a fan of Obertan. I think he has potential and we could see the best of him in a settled team.
I don’t think Michael Owen will leave due to financial problems. If Owen does leave United, his departure will be due to lack of first team football and the rising star that is be Diouf.
